A bull tamer from Madurai district was gored to death during the jallikattu event held in Pugailaipatti near Sanarpatti in Dindigul district on Wednesday. The annual jallikattu event was held as part of St. Sandhiyagappar and St. Sebastian’s Church festival.

Balaguru (24) from Alanganallur in Madurai district was gored to death and at least nine other persons, including police personnel, sustained injuries. Around 800 bulls and 400 bull tamers participated in the event. The participants registered online from Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga districts.

A team of veterinarians and medical personnel examined the bulls and the bull tamers prior to the jallikattu event. Over 300 police personnel were deployed at the venue.

The winning bulls and the bull tamers were given prizes that ranged from gold coins, silver coins, utensils and bicycles. People from far and near had gathered to watch the jallikattu event.
