Team sport is primarily about the success of the collective, about the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. But, every so often, an individual carries the collective. It’s a particularly poignant theme in challenging circumstances — the untiring zeal of the sole saviour.

For a large portion of his career at Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes has played that part. Despite dealing with a chaotic environment, a revolving door of coaches and several teammates without his combination of talent and drive, Fernandes has excelled. He has won United matches with brilliant individual moments even when the team has been played off the park.

March madness

Just in March, the 31-year-old had a role in seven of United’s eight goals across four Premier League matches. In the draw against Bournemouth, he helped put his side ahead twice, first with a penalty and then with an in-swinging corner that provoked an own goal. He supplied two assists in the 3-1 win over Aston Villa, a curled corner to the near post and a simply sublime pass into the Villa area. He scored and assisted in the 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, a game in which United was trailing after just four minutes. He also had an assist in a defeat at Newcastle.

While March provided a miniature of his mastery, Fernandes has been enjoying a tremendous 2025-26 season. His performances have inspired a turnaround that has seen United climb to third on the Premier League table after at one point being just one bad game-week from the bottom half. Fernandes’ 24 goal contributions (eight goals, 16 assists) in the league this season are second only to Erling Haaland’s 29. His 16 assists are a Red Devils record in the Premier League era, surpassing David Beckham’s previous mark of 15 in 1999-2000.

Fernandes’ underlying metrics are, if anything, even more impressive. They point to an inexhaustible source of end product. He has created 101 chances in the league this season. The next best is 58 (Dominik Szoboszlai, Anton Stach, Declan Rice). No player has produced more chances from open play (73), made more successful passes into the penalty area (65), fashioned more big chances (24) or completed more through balls (13), as per Squawka.

Endless creativity: Fernandes carries many levers of threat. No player this season has fashioned more chances than the 31-year-old’s 101. The next best tally is 58.

The numbers bear out the many levers of threat he carries. Fernandes can break lines with an incisive pass, short-circuit the press by going over it with pinpoint accuracy, and carry the ball without losing steam, causing disorganisation in the opposition ranks, before sliding the dagger in. When he isn’t generating big moments, he makes things easier for his teammates when they are under pressure. His ability to keep the ball long enough to trigger his marker to jump before slipping a runner into the space his ‘gravity’ has opened up is just one facet of this.

“Bruno can play so many different positions,” United head coach Michael Carrick said. “He’s just got the quality in the big moments, that composure, and can make the difference for us, and it’s nothing new. He’s always in and around big moments. He’s got his fingerprints on it most of the time. His consistency of performances, his level of performances, his willingness to always put himself out there and physically being able to do it, there’s a lot to credit him for in that respect.”

Indeed, Carrick’s arrival has liberated Fernandes, allowing him to do his best work in a roaming, freewheeling No. 10 role. Under Ruben Amorim, Fernandes was deployed deeper, tasked with controlling the game, not breaking it open. He also had more defensive responsibilities, which he accepted, saying, “You can put me anywhere on the pitch. If you want me to play wing-back, goalkeeper, centre-back, I will do it to the best of my abilities.” But it wasn’t the best use of him.

Top gear engaged

Unleashed by Carrick, Fernandes has found a gear that puts him among the very best in Europe’s top five leagues. Those he plays with recognise that. “Everyone sees he can shoot, he can cross, he can do crazy ball,” Bryan Mbeumo said. “Yeah, for a striker, you just enjoy that. On the pitch, when you’re smart like he is, you don’t even need to think a lot. You just need to make the run and he’s going to play you in the right space every time.”

At an individual level, the Portuguese maestro has been exceptional at United. He needed just 319 games to complete the double of 100 goals and 100 assists in all competitions for one club, faster than even Lionel Messi (338) and Cristiano Ronaldo (341). And yet, despite being a shining light and virtually ever-present during United’s recent lean years, he hasn’t always received the respect he deserves, not least from some of the club’s legends.

He spoke last year of how a player’s legacy is affected by the trophies they win, when perhaps other factors need to be considered as well.

“Nowadays people talk more like you are a better player or a worse player if you win or you lose trophies,” he said on former United player Rio Ferdinand’s podcast. “It changed a lot because if I look at the past, [Francesco] Totti is known as one of the best players in Italy and unfortunately for him he hasn’t won many trophies. But I think if you look back everyone says he’s one of the best that ever played for Italy.

“Totti at Rome, they haven’t won since him. It hasn’t changed much and he still is like the god of Rome. I think when we struggled the most, I stayed present to the club … I think my loyalty was like in the toughest periods. So I’m very aware that I could have done a different path.

“I could have gone in a different way and probably won more trophies and people are talking about me in a different way because I’ve had trophies in my cabinet. But at the same time, I think everything I’ve done for the club in a certain way is still very important.”

Chasing Henry, De Bruyne

United can still mathematically win the Premier League this season, but Fernandes has a shot at something more realistic. He has eight games remaining to register five more assists and break the Premier League record of 20, which Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne hold.

If he can do that, in addition to securing United’s Champions League spot, which looks very likely, Fernandes will have had one of the all-time great seasons — both as an individual and as an individual who carried a collective, adding immeasurably to the sum of its parts.
