MURALI KUMAR The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) will deploy around 500 elevators and nearly 1,000 escalators across its expanding metro network as part of efforts to strengthen passenger safety and ensure smooth commuter movement. Speaking at the second edition of Smart Lift & Mobility World 2026 here on Thursday, BMRCL Director (operations and maintenance) Sumit Bhatnagar said, “The large-scale deployment of vertical mobility systems reflects the changing demands of a rapidly expanding metro system and growing ridership in the city.” The Namma Metro network, which currently spans about 96 km with 83 stations, is set to expand to nearly 175 km with around 127 stations over the next two years. Nearly 78 km of metro corridors are currently under construction across Bengaluru, significantly increasing the requirement for elevators, escalators and travelators, particularly at interchange stations and other high-footfall locations, according to Mr. Bhatnagar. “As the metro network grows, managing passenger movement within stations becomes as important as train operations. In the next phase, we will be operating an inventory of around 500 elevators and close to 1,000 escalators, along with travelators at select stations, to improve safety and ensure seamless movement for commuters,” Mr. Bhatnagar said. With daily ridership touching around one million, efficient circulation within stations has emerged as a critical operational priority, especially during peak hours. Mr. Bhatnagar said that the advanced elevator and escalator technologies play a key role in enhancing safety and accessibility, particularly for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and passengers carrying luggage.
