“If the BJP remains in power, I will provide two lakh jobs in the next five years,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sought the support of voters for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to ensure the kind of peace and development that generates jobs. Addressing a BJP rally in central Assam’s Hojai on Wednesday (March 25, 2026), he promised two lakh government jobs for the State’s youth over the next five years. Mr. Sarma claimed that Assam was free from explosions, shutdowns, and agitations during his tenure as the Chief Minister. “This is why Assam needs a BJP Government for peace and development,” he said. “During election rallies earlier, I used to meet depressed, agitated youth. Today, they ask me about vacancies in the police and other departments, because the atmosphere exists to dream of a brighter future,” he said, pointing out how his government had proved naysayers wrong by providing one lakh government jobs. “If the BJP remains in power, I will provide two lakh jobs in the next five years. Nobody will have to pay anything. Mama is giving you this guarantee,” he said. The youth refer to him as Mama, meaning uncle in Assamese. Campaigning for Shiladitya Dev, the BJP candidate, the Chief Minister also took a swipe at the Congress for taking money even to recruit Anganwadi workers. Earlier in the day, he campaigned in the adjoining Lumding constituency. The BJP seeks to retain both Lumding and Hojai, where Bengali speakers — Hindus and Muslims — are in the majority.
