Congress Lok Sabha MP Deepender Hooda on Tuesday (January 6, 2026) accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of undermining Haryana’s interests, even as the BJP government in Haryana continues to watch as a mute spectator. Mr. Hooda demanded that Haryana be designated as the host or co-host state for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the proposed 2036 Olympics. “We have decided that we will not remain silent and we will fight for Haryana’s rights from Parliament to the streets,” he said, addressing a press conference here. “Haryana, a State that brings 50% of the medals to India from the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Olympics, has been ignored. In the last four Olympics, Haryana athletes won more than half of the country’s total medals. The government has announced the submission of official bids to host the 2036 Olympics in Gujarat. Now, the entire sports budget will be spent there, but if this investment had been made in Haryana, it’s easy to imagine how many more medals our athletes would have won,” he added. Speaking on financial issues, Mr. Hooda said “Haryana has the highest GST collection in the country, and also the highest toll collection. However, Haryana receives the lowest budget allocation in the country. The central government collects a total of 7.10% of GST from Haryana, but in return, Haryana receives only 1.009%, which is the lowest in the entire country.” He also raised the issue of Haryana’s rights regarding water, and said that the State’s rights for a capital city are also being attacked. “The Supreme Court’s decision on the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal was in Haryana’s favour, but no progress has been made on its implementation. As far as the capital Chandigarh is concerned, the proposal for land to build the assembly building has not yet been approved by the central government. We cannot even build our own Assembly building in Chandigarh,” he noted.
