Bengaluru’s iconic single-screen Urvashi reopens; fans heave sigh of relief

The Kannada rural drama Landlord, starring Duniya Vijay, was the last film screened in January 2026 before the theatre shut down operations following a court order. The High Court of Karnataka had directed the tenants to hand over the vacant land, by demolishing the existing buildings, to the landlords by February 15, 2026.

There has been no official word on the latest development, but according to reports, the theatre owners have received a three-year extension of the lease. Regular patrons of Urvashi took to social media to express their relief. “We watched Dhurandhar 2 at Urvashi. We enquired at the ticket counter about the news of the theatre’s closure, and they said ‘Urvashi isn’t going anywhere’,” said one of the fans on Reddit.

Fans on X wished theatre owners would consider a renovation to stay more relevant in the multiplex era. While it remains to be seen if Urvashi is back for a long run, the theatre’s second innings has got off to a flying start, with the tickets for the sequel of Dhurandhar getting sold out in quick fashion.
