Bengaluru will require 1,074.05 km of additional road network over the next four years, the Fifth State Finance Commission noted in its report. The commission has recommended that the government allocate funds to the new city corporations to meet this requirement by taking up at least 250 km of road construction every year. The recommendation follows the requirement proposals submitted by the city corporations, aimed at addressing congestion in the city. Bengaluru currently has a road network of nearly 13,000 km, which has remained stagnant for more than a decade. Meanwhile, the number of vehicles has doubled in the last decade and has reached nearly 1.3 crore. About 1,500 new vehicles are added in the city every day.
