The event was organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Nizamabad branch and the IMA Telangana Mental Health Committee. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Vishal Akula, president of IMA Nizamabad described bipolar disorder as a serious mental illness marked by extreme mood fluctuations. He explained that the term ‘bipolar’ refers to two contrasting mental states: mania, which involves elevated mood and excessive activity, and depression, characterised by persistent sadness and a loss of interest. Elaborating on symptoms, he said that during manic phases, individuals may exhibit excessive confidence, increased talkativeness, impulsive spending, reduced need for sleep, irritability and, in severe cases, grandiose or delusional beliefs that may require hospitalisation. Hypomania, though milder, can still impact daily functioning if left unrecognised.
