The Avadi Traffic Investigation Wing police has arrested an auto-driver who hit a man with his auto-rickshaw and fled the spot. Later, the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Police said that on January 27, at around 6 a.m., P Selva, 60, residing at Amman Koil Street, Thelliyar Agaram, was returning home after his morning walk at the newly established Eco Park in Chettiyar Agaram, when a rashly-driven auto-rickshaw knocked him down. The driver fled the scene.

Selvam sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to a private hospital. Based on the incident, a case was registered at the Avadi Traffic Investigation Wing and a probe was initiated.

Selvam, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital, succumbed to his injuries on January 29. Following his death, the sections of law were altered and further investigation was carried out.

Police said to trace the unidentified vehicle that caused the accident, a special team was formed under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Traffic, Sangu. Details of vehicles that passed through the area at the time of the accident were collected through app-based transport services such as Rapido, Ola, and Uber.

After a detailed investigation, it was found that R. Santhosh, 28, a resident of Kattupakkam, Poonamallee, had driven the auto-rickshaw and caused the accident. Subsequently, the Avadi Traffic Investigation Wing arrested the accused and remanded him in judicial custody.
