The 2026 Assembly elections are set to take place across four States and one Union Territory in India. With elections spanning 824 constituencies, roughly 17.4 crore eligible voters will participate in the democratic process. The voting process will involve 2.18 lakh polling booths, managed by approximately 2.5 million election officials.

The Model Code of Conduct took effect in the poll-bound States immediately after the announcement of the election dates, as the Election Commission assumed responsibility.

1. Assam election schedule (Total Assembly constituencies: 126)

Assam is gearing up for a heated electoral contest involving the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties, including Congress, AGP, AIUDF and UPPL. The Congress has been in the opposition for the past decade, while the BJP has enjoyed two consecutive terms in power. During the first term, Sarbananda Sonowal served as Chief Minister, followed by Himanta Biswa Sarma in the second term. The BJP will be campaigning with Mr. Sarma leading the way once more.

As many as 31,486 polling stations in the north-eastern State have been set up for the conduct of the Assembly polls. Of the 126 Assembly seats, nine have been reserved for Schedule Castes and 19 for Scheduled Tribes. Around 2.50 crore electors are set to cast their franchise in 2026 assembly polls, said the notification.

2. West Bengal election schedule (Total Assembly constituencies: 294)

West Bengal will hold elections in two phases on April 23 and 29, a significant reduction from the eight-phase marathon experienced in the previous Assembly polls.

In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to protect her government from a revitalised BJP, as the Congress and Left seek to regain lost ground.

The upcoming elections are poised for a contentious showdown, with the BJP nominating prominent leader Suvendu Adhikari from Bhabanipur. This sets the stage for a rematch of their 2021 clash in Nandigram. Mr. Adhikari, a former TMC icon, is also running in Nandigram, adding to the political intrigue.

3. Kerala election schedule (Total Assembly constituencies: 140)

The Kerala Assembly election features major political battles between the three parties: the Left Democratic Front (LDF), the United Democratic Front (UDF), and the BJP. The ruling Left is struggling to maintain its position following the lacklustre performance in recent local body elections. Whereas the UDF is focusing on regaining power, and the BJP, although an emerging third power, is looking to strengthen its stronghold in the State.

This election will see 2.71 crore registered voters (including 1.31 crore male voters, 1.38 crore female voters and 277 transgender persons) and a total of 25,231 polling stations. The current term of the Kerala Legislative Assembly is set to conclude on May 23, 2026.

In Tamil Nadu, the DMK is encountering opposition from the AIADMK, now supported by the BJP. The newly-formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and the Naam Tamizhar Katchi in electoral politics will also play a significant role in influencing the tides this time around.

The total number of electors in Tamil Nadu, according to the electoral rolls, is 5.67 crore. Of the 234 Assembly seats, 44 have been reserved for Scheduled Castes and 2 for Scheduled Tribes.

According to the ECI, the Puducherry Assembly polls will see 9.44 lakh registered voters (including 23 thousand first-time voters, 12 thousand voters with disabilities, 139 third genders, and 6,034 senior citizens). The UT has a total of 1099 polling stations for 2026 Assembly polls.
