All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday described the reported assassination of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as “immoral and unlawful”, and expressed hope that the Central Government would unequivocally condemn it.

Referring to the ongoing United States and Israel conflict with Iran, Mr. Owaisi, who represents Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha, said that the war must end immediately, warning that the escalation had already caused severe humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.

He cited reports of casualties, including the deaths of 108 students in an attack on a girls’ school, and noted that the closure of airspace and continuing bombardment across West Asia had affected Indian expatriates working in the region.

Mr. Owaisi said that instability in West Asia would have direct economic implications on India, particularly through rising oil prices and disruptions to remittances sent home by Indian workers. He expressed concern about the safety and livelihoods of expatriates, many of whom were employed in countries affected by the conflict.

Drawing comparisons with regional tensions elsewhere, he alleged that both Israel and Pakistan had failed to allow neighbouring countries to live in peace, referring to skirmishes along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which he described as ‘genocide’.

“We hope that the Government of India will condemn the killing of Khamenei. If this illegal war does not stop, the consequences will be serious. There was no threat to warrant such attacks. We are underestimating the situation,” he said, adding that attempts by US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bring about regime change in Iran would not be successful.

He also recalled the nuclear agreement negotiated during the Barack Obama administration, which capped Iran’s uranium enrichment, and criticised its subsequent withdrawal. He said recent Geneva talks had shown signs of a diplomatic breakthrough before the escalation. Iran, he said, would not remain silent following the killing of a leader respected across the Islamic world, particularly among Shia Muslims.
