The 155 Base Hospital in north-central Assam’s Tezpur has become one of the largest healthcare facilities of the Indian Army in the eight States comprising the northeastern region.

On March 28, Lt. Gen. Gambhir Singh, the General Officer Commanding of the Gajraj Corps, dedicated the third and final phase of the hospital to all ranks and their families at Tezpur and satellite military stations in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The Military Engineering Services executed the project sanctioned by the Ministry of Defence in March 2021 at an estimated cost of ₹112.82 crore. Construction of the project commenced in November 2021.

“The project was conceptualised and developed in close coordination with the Army Medical Services, whose domain expertise was integral in the planning, design finalisation, and validation of functional medical requirements. Their continuous involvement ensured that the facility is optimally configured to meet operational healthcare demands, incorporating modern treatment protocols and patient-centric infrastructure,” Defence spokesperson, Lt. Col. Athul Sreedharan, said.

An official statement said the project was delivered within the stipulated period without any cost overruns, despite the COVID-19 pandemic and climatic conditions.

After the inauguration of Phase III, the hospital’s capacity has increased to 500 beds. The state-of-the-art facility incorporates environmentally sustainable features aligned with modern green building practices. As one of the largest military hospitals in the northeastern region, it ensures stronger medical support for operational formations in the Eastern Theatre.

Lt. Col. Sreedharan said the project has been nominated for the CIDC Vishwakarma Awards 2026 in recognition of its strategic importance, superior construction quality, and sustainable design elements.
