Animal Husbandry department has officially launched the State’s first online marketplace dedicated to the trading of livestock and pets, marking a significant milestone in the digitalisation of the sector. This innovative platform, inaugurated on Wednesday by the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, J. Chinchurani, allows users to directly view and purchase a wide variety of animals and birds through a secure digital system. Named LAPTOP (Livestock And Pets Trading Online Platform), the mobile application is designed to streamline the marketing of high-quality livestock while bridging the gap between farmers and potential buyers. The project was conceived by the Kerala Livestock Development Board (KLDB) which collaborated with the Kerala Startup Mission, eventually entrusting the development of the platform to Amigosia Private Limited. The primary objective of this digital intervention is to benefit both farmers and traders by overcoming the limitations of traditional market systems. By establishing a transparent and secure environment for transactions, the platform ensures that both buyers and sellers are protected from common market discrepancies. One of the standout features of the LAPTOP application is the inclusion of verified listings that provide crucial data such as pedigree information, vaccination status, and health certifications. This transparency promotes market-driven pricing, allowing farmers to understand the true value of their livestock based on current market trends. Currently available as a web application and an Android mobile app, the system is expected to expand to iOS in the future. In the meantime, iOS users can access all services through the web-based interface. To ensure the credibility of the listings, sellers are required to provide detailed records, including the breed, health history, photographs, videos, and insurance coverage of the animals. User convenience The platform is designed with user convenience in mind, featuring advanced search and filter tools that allow buyers to quickly locate livestock and pets in their immediate vicinity. In its initial phase, all services offered through the application are free of charge. Beyond just animals, the marketplace facilitates the trade of cattle feed, supplements, and various farming equipment. It serves as an integrated ecosystem that brings together veterinary doctors, transportation service providers, and insurance companies under one roof. All transactions are maintained as digital records, ensuring a high level of accountability and transparency. To maintain legal and ethical standards, the application includes strict measures to prevent the illegal trade of prohibited or scheduled animals and birds. Sellers must submit an affidavit promising not to list such species, and every listing undergoes a mandatory review and approval process by the application administrator before becoming visible to the public. Furthermore, the platform utilizes artificial intelligence for monitoring and offers multi-language support — currently including English, Malayalam, and Tamil — to ensure accessibility for a diverse range of users across the region.
