Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot conferring gold medals on a student at the 15th convocation of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University in Bidar on Friday. | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot on Friday said that rural India is largely agriculture-based and that animal husbandry forms the backbone of rural economic development. Presiding over the 15th convocation of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU) in Bidar, he conferred degrees and gold medals on graduating students. The Governor said that agricultural output, milk production, dairy development and fisheries have significantly contributed to farmers economic progress. India, he noted, holds a leading position in milk and fish production. He urged university scientists to adopt a holistic “One Health” approach that integrates human, animal and environmental health. Emphasising the role of modern science and technology, Mr. Gehlot said that advancements should focus on enhancing agricultural and livestock productivity. Control of various animal diseases remains a major challenge and scientists must continue sustained research in this direction, he added. He advised graduates to pursue their careers with dedication, integrity and a spirit of service and to serve farmers with compassion while also contributing to environmental conservation. Animal Husbandry Minister K. Venkatesh said that Karnataka has about 2.9 crore livestock and ranks second in milk production in the country. The State produces around one crore litres of milk per day, he added. He said that animal husbandry plays a crucial role in strengthening the rural economy and that the State government is implementing various schemes to boost the sector. Under the Anugraha scheme, compensation is being provided for cattle deaths and livestock are being distributed to women and self-help groups to promote livelihood security. Delivering the convocation address, ICRISAT Director-General Himanshu Pathak praised Karnataka for its progress in agriculture and education. He said that the State’s scientists are contributing across the country. Referring to national achievements, he said that India produced 217 million litres of milk in 2025. It has made significant strides in agriculture with animal husbandry and fisheries playing a vital role. Modern science and technology are helping address several challenges, he observed, while underlining the importance of education in ensuring peace, prosperity and economic development. Vice-Chancellor K.C. Veeranna delivered the introductory address. A total of 34 students were awarded gold medals at the convocation, with Khushi Mendan from Udupi securing 16 gold medals. Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Sharma, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Girish Badole, Superintendent of Police Pradeep Gunti, Registrar P.T. Ramesh and other dignitaries were present.
