Addressing a rally in western Assam’s Tihu, he said the UCC would have a provision to ban polygamy. “The move is aimed at bringing uniformity in civil laws and strengthening social reforms in Assam,” he said. Uttarakhand was the first State to pass and implement the UCC in the first half of 2025. Gujarat passed a Bill in March to implement the UCC. The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government had earlier passed the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill in November 2025, seeking to criminalise the practice of having more than one spouse simultaneously, irrespective of religion. The legislation was seen as a step towards implementing the UCC in the State.
