Members of the Ambalappuzha Petta Thullal group have lodged a complaint with the police alleging mistreatment by a section of police personnel on duty at the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple.

According to the complaint, Periyon Gopalakrishna Pillai, the group’s leader, fell and sustained injuries after being pushed by the police near the holy 18 steps. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the group arrived at the Sannidhanam. As per tradition, all members of the group climb the 18 steps together.

The complaint states that Mr. Pillai and a few members reached the base of the steps first and waited for the rest of the devotees, in accordance with the custom. At that time, a police officer allegedly shouted at them to proceed immediately. When the devotees attempted to comply without prolonging the confrontation, police personnel allegedly pushed and assaulted them.

The devotees further claimed that some members were kicked in the abdomen and that the police even hurled abusive language at them.

A complaint has been submitted to Sabarimala Special Officer ADGP S. Sreejith on the incident. The group said they have received assurances that action will be taken against the erring officers after examining the CCTV footage.
