Over 200 members of the Aided College Teachers’ Association (ACTA) have been staging a sit-in demonstration daily on the premises of Regional Joint Director, Collegiate Education (RJDCE) in Tiruchi for the past few weeks to protest the delay in the implementation of Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) benefits and other issues. In a statement on Thursday, ACTA General Secretary S. Sahaya Sathish said: “The college teachers who are eligible for the associate professor cadre are facing hardship in their service conditions and monetary benefits because of this unjust order. Most of them are on the verge of retirement and hence their promotion to associate professor cadre becomes imperative.” Nearly 3,000 teachers in aided colleges are said to be affected by the deadlock over CAS. ACTA has organised agitations across the State and met Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan and Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, submitting memoranda on the CAS issue, said the statement. “Despite this, action has not been taken with the Commissioner of Collegiate Education citing fund release issues. All aided college teachers in Tamil Nadu are in great mental agony by this step-motherly treatment,” the statement said.
