The announcement of AIADMK candidates for one constituency in Kanniyakumari district and three constituencies in Thoothukudi district has largely met the expectation of party cadres, as some of the preferred candidates from respective constituencies have been fielded for the upcoming assembly elections.

S.T. Chellapandian, a prominent face among the pearl city residents and former MLA of Thoothukudi constituency between 2011 and 2016, has been announced as the AIADMK candidate for upcoming assembly elections.

It is noted he had served as Minister of Labour Welfare in the cabinet of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. He contested in the 2016 Assembly election from the same constituency and lost by a margin of 20,908 votes against the Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan.

However, he has now been renominated by AIADMK party leadership to contest in upcoming assembly elections from Thoothukudi constituency.

For Srivaikuntam constituency former minister S.P. Shanmuganathan was announced as AIADMK’s candidate. He had served in the cabinet of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has held various portfolios over the years. He was Minister of Handlooms in 2001, Minister of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments in 2011, Tourism minister in 2013 and Dairy development minister in 2016. In the last assembly election, he secured 36.18% of votes in the same constituency.

R. Sathya, has been announced as the candidate of Vilathikulam constituency. A resident of Duraisamypuram, she has been in the party since 1998. She had served as AIADMK’s Chairperson of Panchayat Union Council of Thoothukudi district.

Meanwhile, sitting MLA Thalavai Sundaram has once again been fielded from the Kanniyakumari constituency. He has held various ministerial portfolios during the AIADMK regime between 2001 and 2005 and currently serves as party’s Kanniyakumari East District Secretary. In the last assembly election, he won by a margin of 16,210 votes against DMK candidate Austin.
