The AIADMK will hold demonstrations in front of panchayat union offices all over the State to express its opposition to the DMK government’s move against the new rural job guarantee scheme on February 13.

Announcing this in a release, the party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami stated that the proposed scheme, providing job for 125 days, did not envisage reducing the powers of States. It would allow the panchayat unions to decide the nature of job and the capacity of beneficiaries, apart from suspending the scheme in times of peak agricultural season.

Mr. Palaniswami emphasised that the new scheme would not weaken local bodies but strengthen them. He contended that the DMK government had been acting against the proposed scheme which, according to the AIADMK leader, had been framed with rules that would go against the ruling party’s “irregularities.”
