Can you list out activities or tasks that you find yourself doing every day without having to think about them much? Scrolling through your phone, stretching after waking up, washing your hands before a meal, etc., are just a few examples of what we know as ‘habits’. They consist of tasks a person repeats on a regular basis and performs subconsciously without putting much thought into them. Now here’s a question. Can you name a visual one can see in a specific field of mathematics, where repetition is the first thing recognised? It starts with the letter ‘p’ and can also be found in artworks!

If you guessed ‘patterns’, then you are correct! Patterns are a major part of geometry and are known for their predictability. They are basically the artistic form of repetition. In The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, by Charles Duhigg, there is a process known as a ‘habit loop’, which is a three-part neurological pattern that goes into the performance of a habit by any person. According to Duhigg, a habit consists of three major elements: the cue, the routine, and the reward.
