If government universities fail to maintain higher academic standards, they will face setbacks from private and foreign universities, said Higher Education Minister Dr. M.C. Sudhakar.

He was speaking at an event where Karnataka State Higher Education Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the British Council in India to strengthen collaboration in education, skills, and cultural exchange.

“Universities in the State will increasingly face competition from foreign institutions. In this light, maintaining high academic standards has become essential. Only when our universities become academically stronger can our students receive quality education,” he said. Through this agreement, opportunities will be created to strengthen research, skill development, and digital libraries at six universities across the state, he added.

Dr. Sudhakar noted that the Karnataka government has successfully implemented several agreements with universities in the U.K. aimed at advancing education while keeping the interests of students in mind. Since a large number of students in our universities come from rural backgrounds, collaborations with international universities will provide them with broader academic exposure and opportunities, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Alison Barrett, Country Director, British Council in India, said that the continued partnership was fostering knowledge exchange and strengthening academic collaboration.
