Singanallur Assembly Constituency covers a rapidly developing urban spread in Coimbatore city, with a mix of small industries, residential colonies, educational institutions, and major public infrastructure. Aspiring youth employed in the IT sector, workers of the construction sector, and MSME industry owners are among the electorate of the constituency that covers Coimbatore International Airport and Singanallur bus stand. The Trichy Road flyover inaugurated in 2022 and the Avinashi Road flyover in 2025 were major infrastructure additions here in the recent years. However, the Singanallur flyover, a long-pending demand remains a non-starter and expansion of the Coimbatore International Airport has not taken off. In some parts of Peelamedu, the underground drainage system has not been implemented though the pipelines are laid. For a constituency that is largely populated with mid-income families, the hike in property tax is a huge burden, says Manoharan, a resident of Sungam area. “I started my industry at Singanallur in 1987. Since then the industries here should have seen about 20 % growth. But, in the recent years, the IT sector has attracted a lot of youngsters. Hence, the number of rental properties has increased. This has created a stress on the basic civic amenities. The government should look at subsidies to promote installation of solar rooftops at all houses. It should take care of roads, UGD, waste management, and water supply,” says Ramamurthy, an MSME owner. While dumping of garbage is not seen on the main roads, there is indiscriminate dumping in the residential areas and along the roads in the interior areas. There is no system or person to check this, said Jothimani, a resident of Ramanathapuram. “Water supply in some of the highly-populated lanes of Ramanathapuram is once in 10 days or even once in 15 days. There is constant damage to pipeline in some place affecting the supply here. Workers employed in the construction sector need to leave for work early in the morning and are often seen struggling for water. There is no one to even listen to their plight,” claims Easwari, who works as a domestic help. “Even now when there is war in Iran and MSMEs in Coimbatore are struggling, we pay high power costs that increases every year and high fixed charges,” says Kanagaraj, who runs a micro industry. Areas coming under Singanallur constituency need better civic infrastructure and the elected representative should be able to address their needs, say the residents. The constituency was represented by MLAs from the CPI, AIADMK and the DMK over the last five decades and will see candidates from the AIADMK, Congress, NTK, and the TVK contest the 2026 Assembly elections.
