The protests which began over worsening economic conditions have since evolved into broader demonstrations opposing the leadership of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to the activists, at least 544 people were killed, of which 496 were protesters and 48 were members of the security forces. Another over 10,600 people have been detained over the two weeks of protests, said the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency on Sunday (January 11, 2026), which has been accurate in previous unrest in recent years.
