In a daring incident, an accused allegedly attacked a Sub-Inspector of Police identified as Johnson Jayakumar with an ‘aruval’ and in a bid to protect the police team, the DSP shot at the accused below his knee in Dindigul district on Sunday.

Following a tip-off about the movement of the history-sheeter received by the SP Pradeep, a team was formed to secure the suspect.

Police said that Vigneshwaran, a history sheeter figured in 15 criminal cases including three murders.

The team headed to Saveriyarpalayam near Begumpur and spotted the accused.

Even as the police attempted to arrest him, Vigneshwaran picked up an aruval hidden within himself and attacked the SI of Police and fled from the scene.

In a bid to secure him, DSP Karthik, opened fire at Vigneshwaran, who fell unconscious on the ground after he suffered injury below his right knee.

Both the SI and the accused were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment. The doctors said that the SI of Police had lost blood, while the accused Vigneshwaran was stable.

The Dindigul South police have registered a case and are investigating.

A senior police officer said that Vigneshwaran had planned to eliminate a rival and was about to leave the spot. The police team arrived well on time and prevented the murder and also seized weapons apparently meant to kill the rival.
