The Zam Bazaar police arrested a woman involved in two theft cases, including one in which she drugged a homemaker with a sedative mixed in a milk sweet and stole her thali chain.

According to police, Malathiri, 44, a resident of Chinnappa Street, Triplicane, works as a car mechanic. His wife Sujatha works from home as a tailor. On January 7, after Malathiri left for work, an acquaintance named Arnipalli Ravanamma, who had come to Sujatha’s house for stitching work, handed over a cloth and also offered a sweet she had brought, asking Sujatha to have it.

After consuming it, Sujatha fainted. When she regained consciousness in the evening, she found that the six-sovereign gold thali chain she had been wearing around her neck was missing. Based on a complaint, Zam Bazaar Police Station crime wing took up investigation.

On investigation, the accused, Arnipalli Ravanamma, 34, residing at Triplicane, was arrested. The stolen chain was recovered. Further investigation revealed that the accused had stolen about 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery from the bureau of a house belonging to Maharajan, a resident of the Triplicane area, a month ago.

A total of about 19.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery were recovered from her.
