Last week, I ate 20-plus dishes from different parts of the country in a single meal. No, this was not a buffet at a star restaurant, but an intimate meal at someone’s home in Chennai.

We have seen kitty parties, apartment communities hosting potlucks, and people hosting friends over for a meal. These community-driven social gatherings are a great way to not just learn and enjoy varied cuisines but are becoming central to the way people make new friends in the real world. Thoughts that went into the creation of The Shared Table, a monthly potluck that brings together Chennai’s many home cooks who run cloud kitchens. The brainchild of Yogita Uchil — who helms the food revival project Soul on a Plate and digital community, Eat Pray Love — it kickstarted in March and the latest edit held last week brought together 20 home cooks.
