Public can now watch classic movies free of cost at the ‘Friday Screening’ at the Kozhikode Corporation Cultural Centre in Anakkulam in the city. The weekly screening is being organised by the Regional Centre of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy in association with Kozhikode–UNESCO City of Literature.

The screening was inaugurated by Mayor O. Sadasivan at Balan K. Nair Hall in the cultural centre on Friday (January 10, 2026), in the presence of Deputy Mayor S. Jayasree; Regional Coordinator of the Chalachitra Academy Naveena Vijayan; nodal officer of the City of Literature A.K. Saritha; member of the Malabar Devaswom Board Prajish Thiruthiyil; assistant director of the Department of Health P.P. Pramod Kumar; and filmmaker Prathap Joseph.

Pather Panchali, the noted Bengali film directed by Satyajit Ray and released in 1955, was the first film to be screened at the ‘Friday Screening’. Subtitles were provided in Malayalam. Several cinema enthusiasts, including members of various film societies in the city, as well as the general public, attended the first showing.

The screening will be held every Friday at the hall at 5:30 p.m., featuring other notable Indian and international films, and will be open to all.
