In a significant boost to Kerala’s decentralised IT growth, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the State’s first Work Near Home (WNH) facility at the Ambalakkara ground in Kottarakkara on January 19. Developed at an investment of over ₹6 crore, this state-of-the-art facility is equipped with high-speed internet, full power backup, and air-conditioning, providing a seamless global work environment for local talent. “The project has already seen high demand, with 60 reservations made ahead of its launch. This initiative, alongside the entry of Zoho Corporation and the development of a new IT Park, positions Kottarakkara as a rising tech destination. By enabling educated professionals to work for international firms from their hometowns, the government aims to create at least 5,000 job opportunities in the region, marking a new era for the local economy,” said Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal. Located in a repurposed 9,250-square-foot BSNL building near the Ganapathy Temple, this two-storey facility is designed to provide a world-class professional environment outside of traditional IT hubs like Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram. With a total capacity of 141 workstations, the centre is specifically tailored to bridge the gap between local talent and global opportunities. Flexible, accessible workspace By bringing the office closer to the community, the project aims to provide a flexible and accessible workspace for homemakers looking to re-enter the workforce after a career break. It will also help to reduce commute stress and save thousands of hours for professionals who previously had to travel long distances to major cities. A high-level organising committee constituted to ensure seamless execution of the facility’s launch has held its inaugural meeting to finalise event arrangements. The committee is led by Mr. Balagopal as patron, with Kottarakkara municipality chairperson Anita Gopakumar serving as chairperson and K-DISC executive director P.M. Riyas as convener.
