Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma. Subramanian inaugurated a new 16-slice CT scanner at the Trauma Care Centre of the Government Rajaji Hospital on Saturday.

The equipment was procured at a cost of ₹2.81 crore through the National Health Mission (NHM) fund.

The Minister also launched an 800 mA digital X-ray unit worth ₹62 lakh. Additionally, the hospital’s mortuary facility was upgraded with 24 new cold storage boxes, installed at a cost of ₹93.50 lakh.

The Radio Diagnosis Department at GRH is currently equipped with five CT scanners. Among these are, an advanced 128-slice CT scanner used for complex procedures such as cardiac angiography and angiography of the upper and lower limbs.

Speaking to journalists, Mr. Subramanian noted that while projects worth ₹4.37 crore were launched on Saturday, the government had spent a total of ₹420 crore on new buildings and high-end medical equipment for GRH alone since assuming office in 2021.

“The major facilities provided to GRH include the JICA Tower Block (₹313.25 crore), a Cath Lab (₹7.99 crore), academic and residential blocks (₹42.25 crore), student hostels and a library (₹48.62 crore), a pulmonary medicine building (₹2.89 crore), pay wards (₹1.03 crore), a DEXA scan unit (₹50 lakh), and new ambulances (₹21.95 lakh),” he added.

The Minister highlighted that the new equipment and improved infrastructure have significantly boosted patient footfall. The number of outpatients, which stood at 3,000–4,000 daily four years ago, has nearly doubled to 6,500–7,000 daily. Similarly, the inpatient wards now accommodate 3,000 to 3,500 patients at any given time, supported by the hospital’s massive capacity of 4,420 beds.

Regarding ongoing and future projects, Mr. Subramanian stated that the construction of a five-storey Paediatric Health and Research Centre (₹40 crore) and a multi-disciplinary dental clinic (₹1.03 crore), along with hostel renovations, are currently underway. Furthermore, a dedicated 100-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) building, estimated at ₹38 crore, is planned for construction at the hospital.
