A city-based team of veterinarians have used fish skin grafts (FSG) to manage and heal a dog in severe condition of sepsis. The ill canine had reportedly suffered about 50% of skin damage due to the infection. Addressing the media on the development here on Saturday, veterinarian Venkat Yadav of a private hospital claimed that the FSG procedure is an innovation in advanced animal healthcare, as until now there were limited options to treat sepsis. Fish skin, rich in collagen, omega fatty acids, and bioactive compounds, act as a temporary skin substitute while it naturally adheres to the wound, retains moisture, and promotes faster regeneration of skin. Former principal at Government Veterinary College Mr. Lakshman, also present in the address, said the innovative procedure is remarkable and would lead to improved recovery rates.
