The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has registered a case and ordered an investigation into allegations that the police failed to act on an attack by the quarry mafia targetting a man opposing illegal quarrying at Cheerattamala near Perinthalmanna. The Commission’s judicial member K. Baijunath directed the District Police Chief to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within 15 days. The Commission will consider the case at its next sitting at Tirur. Jijo Varghese, an activist with the Centre for Protection of Social Justice, was allegedly attacked by a gang linked to the quarry mafia on April 23 while he was travelling on a motorcycle.
