The Karnataka Congress in the last fortnight has seen an intense debate on the status of Muslims in the party. This was sparked by the party’s decision to suspend three-time MLC (Member of Legislative Council) Abdul Jabbar from primary membership, and by the sacking of the Chief Minister’s political secretary Naseer Ahmed on charges of anti-party activities during the recent campaign for the Davanagere South bypoll. This action has divided opinion within the party, with a section defending it as a necessary disciplinary measure, and another arguing that the “hasty” move could alienate the community, a significant bulwark of the party.
