MOORTHY Known for its tasty jackfruits and fragrant flowers is the Alangudi Assembly constituency where farming remains the predominant activity. This constituency in Pudukottai district is endowed with a mixed landscape of highly fertile and dry areas. Although there is no dearth of waterbodies such as tanks and ponds all over the constituency, several of them are bone dry forcing farmers to heavily depend on borewells for irrigation. The constituency faced massive destruction to plantations when Cyclone Gaja struck in late 2018 shattering the livelihood of several farmers. Almost eight years on, farmers are yet to forget the destruction Cyclone Gaja caused to their day-to-day living.
