Kandan, former MLA of the constituency from 2011 – 2016 and three-time chairman of Perungudi Panchayat from 1996 – 2011. Currently the party’s Chennai Suburban district secretary, he says problems that residents face in the Constituency are due to the lack of maintenance. “The DMK has failed to maintain the assets that the AIADMK had created. I had developed basic infrastructure during my stints as panchayat chairman. When I became an MLA, I got more areas to serve. I improved those areas that were outside the Chennai Corporation. They lacked facilities such as good roads, drinking water lines, and even lighting. Garbage clearance was a major issue since the number of houses had increased. I requested the government for permission to dump the garbage at Perungudi,” Mr. Kandan told The Hindu, amidst his campaign.
