Soaring temperatures are posing a threat to cardamom-growing areas in the hilly district of Idukki. According to local growers, the High Ranges are witnessing extreme heat that may severely impact production in the upcoming cropping season. Stany Pothen, planter and member of the Kerala Plantation Business Advisory Committee, noted that temperatures at his plantation in Vellaramkunnu reached 35.2°C on Sunday. “This is the first time such a high temperature is being reported in this cardamom-growing area,” Mr Pothen said. “We are fearing a significant crop loss the next season, which starts in July. Some areas have not yet received summer rain, which is further distressing the plants. While growers expected a good harvest, this unusual climate is dashing their hopes,” he said.
