In a move aimed at strengthening child protection mechanisms, the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram–District Early Intervention Centre organised a comprehensive awareness and training programme at the District Headquarters Hospital here on Friday.

District Medical and Health Officer D.T. Sudha Rani supervised the programme. Addressing the participants, she said the training aimed at creating a safer environment for children by enhancing awareness of their rights and the legal safeguards available to them. She observed that coordinated efforts by line departments such as the police, the Integrated Child Development Services, and non-governmental organisations were crucial to achieving this objective.

Senior Civil Judge and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority M.S. Bharathi underscored the importance of legal literacy, timely reporting, and a coordinated institutional response in cases involving child victims.

Clinical psychologist Harisha sensitised the participants on various forms of child sexual abuse, early identification of warning signs, the psychological impact on victims, and the need for sensitive handling and immediate intervention.

Officials also explained the services provided by the District Early Intervention Centre, including early screening under the ‘4Ds’ — defects at birth, diseases, deficiencies, and developmental delays and disabilities — along with medical, psychological, and rehabilitation support.

The speakers further elaborated on key provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, procedures for case registration, and the significance of the Child Helpline 1098.
