Two fishers, both natives of West Bengal, died on Saturday (April 18), after they were hospitalised following breathing problems in the wake of suspected inhalation of smoke off the Beypore harbour. According to Fisheries department sources, the deceased are Ripan Das, 22, and Sahadeb Das, 19, natives of South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal. The sources said that Gunadhar Das, Ripan Das, Sahadeb Das, and Babu, a native of Beypore, were part of a 12-member team that set out for fishing from the harbour in a private boat earlier in the morning. Around 5.15 a.m., the four of them went to examine how water had entered the engine room.
