This is a major step forward in strengthening the division’s freight operations and revenue generation. The container traffic was introduced under ‘Mission 3000’ — an ambitious initiative of the Indian Railways to significantly boost freight transport. Caustic soda was loaded in 48 containers from the newly commissioned Peralam goods shed (container railway terminal) bound to a private siding of Vedanta Ltd., Anantapur, in Andhra Pradesh. The train was formally inaugurated by Divisional Railway Manager Balak Ram Negi on Friday. This was a culmination of the coordinated efforts of key stakeholders such as the Central Warehousing Corporation and AVG Logistics. The launch of container traffic from Peralam opens up a new freight avenue for Tiruchi Division. The operation is expected to generate an estimated revenue of ₹41. 25 lakh with a projected movement of about four rakes per month of caustic soda from Peralam on a regular basis, a press release from Tiruchi Division said.
