The residents of Kollam are grappling with an unrelenting summer on the heels of a gruelling week where temperatures consistently breached the 37°C threshold. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting that the mercury could climb as high as 39°C through April 19, a yellow alert has been officially issued for the district, signalling a period of heightened heat risk.

The intense heat, combined with the humidity levels has turned daily commutes and outdoor labour into gruelling tasks. Many citizens have reported physical exhaustion and heat-related discomfort, as the cooling effect of the evening breeze remains elusive. The usual hustle of the city markets has noticeably dimmed during the midday hours, with people preferring to stay indoors to escape the stinging rays of the sun.
