The explicit silence in the draft legislation on delimitation on retaining the current proportion of seats of States, prompted the Telugu Desam Party, a key National Democratic Alliance member, to reach out to Home Minister Amit Shah and Law Minister Arjun Meghwal on Wednesday (April 15, 2026).

The two Ministers had reassured Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu that the strength of southern States in Lok Sabha will not be diluted by the government, an assurance reiterated by Mr. Shah in Lok Sabha on Thursday (April 16, 2026) evening. However, as per sources, the government does not plan to introduce any amendments to either the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 or the Delimitation Bill, 2026 to clear this ambiguity.
