DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi provide a written assurance in Parliament that Parliamentary constituencies would continue to be determined based on the 1971 population for the next 25 years.

Addressing a public meeting in Namakkal, Mr. Stalin said the DMK’s opposition to delimitation stemmed from concerns over federal balance and representation. He alleged that the Union government’s intent was not women’s empowerment but the pursuit of “one nation, one government,” which he linked to the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He accused AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami of supporting this position of the Union government. Consequently, he argued that a vote for the AIADMK in the Assembly elections was tantamount to be a vote for the BJP.
