With less than a week left for the Assembly election in the State, police have intensified vehicle checks at five key checkposts along the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border to prevent smuggling of liquor from Karnataka into the State.

Police suspect that, due to geographical proximity, liquor consumers and certain groups may attempt to transport alcohol illegally across the border. In response, a joint consultation meeting between Erode district police and Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar police was held recently. During the meeting, both sides agreed to strengthen surveillance and take strict action against those involved in smuggling liquor into the State. Following this, enforcement measures have been stepped up on both sides of the border.
