At Kavundampalayam Assembly constituency in Coimbatore district, which is the largest in the district in terms of number of voters, the contest is mainly between the incumbent AIADMK MLA, 64-year-old P.R.G. Arunkumar and first-time contestant of the Congress, 29-year-old K.P. Surya Prakash.

On Wednesday evening, Mr. Prakash kick-started the campaign after praying at the Mariamman temple at Kalapatti. Accompanying his campaign vehicle were cadre from the Congress, the DMK and the Communist parties. “Wherever I go, I ask the people when was the last time they met their MLA. And they say they have never seen him. He has, in fact, blocked the DMK government schemes from implementation in this constituency,” Mr. Prakash alleged.
