Hamsini, a female hippopotamus who was a resident of Tyavarekoppa Tiger and Lion Safari in Shivamogga, died on April 14, 2026. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Hamsini, a 12-year-old female hippopotamus who suffered from a severe infection following intrauterine foetal death, died at Tyavarekoppa Tiger and Lion Safari in Shivamogga around 3 p.m. on April 14. This was the third pregnancy for the 12-year-old hippo. She had delivered a calf in 2024. But, the calf drowned. In 2025, she delivered another calf. But, that calf also died after being attacked by its father — the male hippo — soon after birth.
