Former State president of BJP K. Annamalai on Monday alleged irregularities in the State government’s textile procurement policy and accused it of side lining local weavers in the procurement of cloth for school students.

Campaigning for S. Yuvaraja, who is contesting from the Erode (East) Assembly constituency on the BJP’s Lotus symbol, in the presence of Tamil Maanila Congress president G.K. Vasan at Villarasampatti Four Road, Mr. Annamalai said about 4.5 crore metres of cloth are required annually for school uniforms in the State. Powerlooms, handlooms and pedal looms in Erode have the capacity to meet the entire demand. “However, the State Government placed orders for only one crore metres locally, while procuring three crore metres from other States,” he alleged.
