Joseph Vijay of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has filed a writ appeal before the Madras High Court against the refusal of a single judge to interfere with the imposition of a penalty of ₹1.5 crore on him by the Income Tax (I-T) department for not having voluntarily disclosed an additional income of ₹15 crore during the financial year 2015-16. Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy of the High Court had dismissed the assessee’s 2022 writ petition on February 6, 2026, after observing that he was rejecting the plea only on the ground that the penalty order had been issued within the period of limitation prescribed under Section 275(1)(a) of the Income Tax Act of 1961 and not on any other ground raised by the petitioner.
