A police head constable was found dead at the West Traffic police station in Shivamogga on Thursday.

The officer, identified as Mohammed Zakaria, 55, allegedly died by suicide while he was on duty. He is survived by his wife and three children. A death note was found by his body, the police said.

Zakaria, who was on the night shift on Thursday, returned to the station around 4.30 a.m. after the city rounds. The staff members noticed his body around 6 a.m. and informed senior officers and his family members.

Zakaria, who was under treatment for back pain, was on leave for two months and returned to duty on January 6.

Nikhil B., Superintendent of Police, visited the spot. Speaking to the media, the officer said that the head constable died by suicide. He had sent a note on WhatsApp to a few colleagues and officers. He mentioned his health condition and named a colleague, who allegedly irritated him, in the note. From the family members, the police learnt that Zakaria had a history of depression and had attempted to end his life a few days ago.

“Based on the statement by the family members, the police registered an unnatural death report,” the SP said.
