Assam BJP counters allegation of electoral rolls manipulation

The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has slammed the “directionless” Opposition parties for accusing it of manipulating the electoral rolls to ensure victory for the National Democratic Alliance in the upcoming Assembly polls.

The elections to the 126-member House are expected by the first half of May.

In a statement on Thursday (January 8, 2026), BJP spokesperson Kamal Kumar Medhi said the Congress and other Opposition parties let Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi “spread one imaginary narrative after another” to start ranting.

Raijor Dal is a constituent of a forum of non-NDA parties in Assam. A major political party not in this forum is the Maulana Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front.

“The moment Akhil Gogoi floated a new story about alleged voter deletion, leaders of the Congress and other Opposition parties rushed to endorse his claims without verifying their truth or authenticity,” Mr Medhi said.

“A confused and directionless Opposition, unable to place even a single credible political issue before the people, is now suffering from deep frustration. None of the issues raised by the Opposition against the BJP-led alliance government under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma has found acceptance among the people,” he said.

Mr. Medhi claimed that the people of Assam are convinced that indigenous communities and citizens of Indian origin are secure only under the BJP.

On January 6, Mr. Gogoi claimed that the BJP was pursuing an agenda to manipulate the electoral rolls in Assam by deleting at least 10,000 voters per constituency. He also claimed that the BJP tasked all its MLAs and district presidents to sift the pro-BJP voters from those who are against the party for necessary action.

The Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) made similar claims, the latter insisting that the authorities in western Assam’s Bajali district verbally instructed officials to review the voters’ lists of 115 polling booths in Muslim-majority areas.
