An unidentified person allegedly attempted to rape a 32-year-old woman at Macherla in Palnadu district on Thursday (April 02), prompting a police investigation based on the survivor’s statement.

Superintendent of Police B. Krishna Rao told The Hindu on Friday (April 03) that the efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the accused. Police teams are collecting evidence and examining CCTV footage from nearby locations to trace the suspect. “We are confident of nabbing the accused soon,” he said.

According to preliminary reports, the accused approached the victim’s house seeking a glass of water in view of the summer heat, he then allegedly forced his way inside, threatened her with a knife, and tied her hands and legs using her dupatta. He then reportedly attempted to sexually assault her. Sources said the victim resisted and even tried to deter the attacker by falsely claiming she was suffering from AIDS, but the accused allegedly ignored her pleas and continued the assault. Suspicious bloodstains found at the scene have raised questions about possible physical violence during the incident. The victim is a government employee.

After the accused fled, the woman informed her parents, following which the matter came to the attention of the police.

The victim has been shifted to the Government General Hospital in Guntur for treatment, and medical reports are awaited. The SP assured that justice would be delivered and that the investigation is progressing on priority.
