The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday directed the State government to provide compensation of ₹10 lakh to the family of a Class XII girl, who was sexually assaulted and murdered recently in Thoothukudi district. This amount is in addition to the victim compensation sum. The court also directed the State to pursue the disciplinary proceedings initiated against erring police personnel for not registering the FIR in the case earlier. Meanwhile, the State government informed the court that a final report in the case has been filed before the trial court. Earlier, the court had directed the Vilathikulam Deputy Superintendent of Police to investigate the murder of the 17-year-old girl student at Kulathur in Thoothukudi. The incident sparked widespread outrage. The police arrested a 38-year-old man, who was earlier arrested for a similar offence in 2022. Muneeswaran was previously awarded life sentence in the 2022 case. Following the suspension of sentence pending appeal in that case, he had come out on bail.
